DAY 1: Journey to Istanbul
Flight to Istanbul. Our friendly, competent, English-speaking tour guides will collect us at the airport and accompany us to the coaches for the transfer to our hotel, where we will be served a refreshing welcome drink. We spend the night in Istanbul.
DAY 2: Highlights of Istanbul, 2010 European Capital of Culture
(UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The entire day will be spent in ancient Istanbul, the former Constantinople. We stroll across the former Hippodrome, today‘s Sultan Ahmed Square – a great attraction with its German Fountain, Egyptian Obelisk and Serpentine Column – on our way to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. This masterpiece of Classical Ottoman architecture is also known as the “Blue Mosque” because of its beautiful blue tiles. We will then view the famous Topkapı Palace, from which the Ottoman sultans once ruled their empire, before paying a memorable visit to the imposing Hagia Sophia, a fascinating piece of Byzantine architecture. After exploring the Egyptian bazaar we spend the night in Istanbul.
DAY 3: Istanbul – Troy (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
In the morning, we drive through the fertile hinterlands of Istanbul to the Dardanelles. Like Alexander the Great before us, we cross the world-famous straits to Canakkale, crossing from Europe into Asia and soon arriving at the site of the legendary city of Troy. Discovered and excavated by the German archaeologist Heinz Schliemann, the city was the setting for Homer’s Iliad and the scene of the Trojan War, which dragged on for ten long years. We make a tour of the excavation site, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, before continuing our journey in the lee of mythical Mount Ida as far as Ayvalik. We spend the night in the Ayvalik area.
DAY 4: Sardis – Denizli
After breakfast, we head south through the picturesque Aegean hinterlands. Along the way, we visit the excavations in Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and seat of the mighty King Croesus. The home of one of the seven churches to receive a letter of Revelation from St. John the Apostle, the town is credited with the most beautiful setting. The Temple of Artemis, the Roman Synagogue and the baths-gymnasium complex all contribute to create a remarkable impression of the city‘s former splendour. From Sardis, we continue on to our next hotel in the Denizli area.
DAY 5: Laodicea - Antalya
In the morning we view the recently excavated ancient city of Laodicea. In Roman times, it was a trading centre and famous for its purple fabrics. Among the most important attractions of Laodicea are two theatre complexes, the Syrian Road, which stretches just 900 metres and the nymphaea fountains. The recently unearthed church, one of the oldest anywhere in the world, is hailed as a sensation. We then drive through the imposing Taurus Mountains and past quaint villages towards Antalya. In a traditional carpet-weaving factory we experience the fascinating, centuries-old craft of carpet-making. You’ll be enthralled by the variety, craftsmanship and rich colours of the hand-woven carpets. We spend the night in the Antalya.
DAY 6: Antalya – the Old Town
Today we spend the day in Antalya itself. The picturesque old town and its colourful confusion of narrow streets and centuries-old buildings, its idyllic yacht marina and Hadrian‘s Gate are just some of the many attractions on today‘s programme. Following a guided tour of the historical old town of Antalya, we have a little time to spend at our leisure amid the brilliant colours and enticing smells of the People‘s Market. On our trail of Turkey’s great craft traditions, we then visit a jewellery workshop and a leather workshop. Here you not only find out more about the craft processes but also have the chance to acquire a personal holiday souvenir. We spend the night in the Antalya region.
DAY 7: Free day
Today is a day to relax and do as you wish. You can enjoy the comforts of your hotel, chill out at the pool, or ease your muscles with a visit to a traditional Turkish steam bath. Take a relaxed stroll along the beach or discover more of the natural and cultural treasures of the surroundings. Add some further fantastic experiences to your rich collection of holiday memories.
